Have you ever thought about what beauty actually is. We talk in terms of “inner” beauty and “physical” beauty. We refer to the beauty of nature while deferring to other forms of beauty in the arts. I like to say that I can only catch beauty in a whisper. A sudden breath. A glance. Shakespeare’s Juliet said, “tis too much like the light that doth cease to be; ere one can say it lightens.” Beauty does not linger, it only visits. Yet beauty’s visitation affects us and invites us into its rhythm, it calls us to feel, think, and act beautifully in the world: to create and live a life that awakens the Beautiful. Elaine Scarry once wrote, “How one walks through the world, the endless small adjustments of balance, is affected by the shifting weights of beautiful things.”
